Synopsis: Ola Electric may lose up to Rs 5,000 per vehicle in subsidies if registration delays for over 16,000 scooters sold in February 2025 spill into the next financial year. Delays in contract renegotiations with registration agencies are causing the issue.
Ola Electric is facing the risk of losing out on substantial government subsidies if more than 16,000 of its e-scooters sold in February 2025 are not registered by the end of the current financial year, which concludes on March 31, 2025. The electric vehicle manufacturer could miss out on up to Rs 5,000 in subsidies per scooter due to delays in renegotiating contracts with registration agencies.
According to the government’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidy guidelines, the subsidy is only applicable once a vehicle is registered in the national database, Vahan. However, Ola Electric Mobility Ltd has experienced delays in getting the scooters registered, which may result in significant financial losses if registrations extend into the next fiscal year (starting April 1, 2025).
Ola previously informed stock exchanges that the delay in registration for February sales was due to ongoing contract negotiations with service providers who handle the registration process. While the company remains hopeful of resolving the issue, the tight timeframe poses a significant challenge.
The potential loss of the subsidy could impact the company’s financial projections and overall competitiveness in the fast-growing Indian EV market. The subsidy benefit is seen as a crucial factor in pricing EVs affordably for Indian consumers, and missing out could hurt both sales and profit margins.
Ola's ability to maintain its market-leading position in the electric scooter segment depends on resolving these issues promptly and ensuring a smooth registration process moving forward.

"This is concerning for both Ola Electric and its customers. The subsidy plays a big role in keeping EV prices affordable. Hopefully, they can sort out these registration delays quickly. Any updates on how long this process might take?"
