Since Elon Musk assumed control of X, formerly known as Twitter, the platform has garnered global attention. However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg doesn't believe it will achieve its maximum potential under Musk's leadership. In a recent interview with Verge Health, Zuckerberg acknowledged that while the pace of change was slow on X before Musk's takeover, it had a better chance of realizing its full potential back then.
Zuckerberg stated, "I mean, he's [Musk] definitely a change agent. I think it's still not clear exactly what trajectory it's on, but I do think he's been pretty polarizing, so I think that the chance that it sort of reaches the full potential on the trajectory that it's on is... I don't know. I guess I'm probably less optimistic or just think there's less of a chance now than there was before."
Zuckerberg also emphasized the importance of understanding how a social media platform affects its users. He characterized Twitter as "negative and critical," contrasting it with Instagram, which he sees as leaning toward the "happier end of the spectrum." Facebook, in his view, falls somewhere in between, featuring both uplifting moments and grim global news that people want to stay informed about.
He explained, "I always just thought you could create a discussion experience that wasn't quite so negative or toxic. I think in doing so, it would actually be more accessible to a lot of people. I think a lot of people just don't want to use an app where they come away feeling bad all the time."
Despite much anticipation, the much-discussed cage fight between tech billionaires Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk never materialized. In the interview, Zuckerberg revealed that he won't be fighting Musk anytime soon but is open to competing against someone else, "probably next year." He mentioned, "I want to keep competing, but I just need to find someone who asks me."
When asked if he believes Musk was ever serious about fighting him, Zuckerberg admitted that he's uncertain. However, he expressed his enjoyment of it as a sport and mentioned his involvement in training others. He expressed a desire to compete more in the future.
